# Glass Balcony Pleated Blind

Pleated blind on the glass balcony. Hook mounting folding with the panels, a slim profile and heat control. Cuts balcony heat, works as a second living room.

## Glass Balcony Analysis

The glass balcony is the pleated blind’s most characteristic application. When the panels fold, the blind must accompany the fold and normal blind systems prevent this movement. The hook-mounted pleated blind grips onto the glass panel’s top profile. It folds together with the panel. It makes the balcony both cool in summer and privately usable.

### Folds with the Panel

The blind grips the glass panel’s profile with hooks. When the panels stack, the blind stays on the panel.

### Cuts the Balcony Heat

The glass balcony heats quickly in the sun. The pleated blind holds the sun at the glass line and reduces the heat reaching the interior.

### Privacy Control

When the balcony is open to neighbouring windows, the blind cuts the sightline with its band position. The view stays free downward.

### Second Living-Room Function

In the application turning the glass balcony into living space, the blind turns the balcony into a daytime-usable volume.

## Heat, Condensation and Panel Fit on the Glass Balcony

The glass balcony works with a folding-panel mechanism. The blind selection has to not disturb this mechanical order. [Hook-mounted pleated units](https://www.fenetresystems.com/en/hook-mounted-pleated-blind/) fitted on the panel fold together with it and the blind moves along while the glass stacks. Exterior systems built above the aluminium rail close the panels’ folding path and cancel the glass balcony’s actual function.

On the heat side the glass balcony is a seasonal volume. In summer the interior temperature rises above the outside with the greenhouse effect. Sunscreen or [screen-class fabric](https://www.fenetresystems.com/en/screen-blind/) cuts part of the radiation at the glass surface. On south façades wanting full shade, the blackout series is also used. In winter the blind is kept open to benefit from passive solar gain.

Condensation is the second condition to watch. On days with a high temperature difference the glass interior surface holds water. Since on-panel units run parallel to the glass they can touch the condensation water. Moisture-series fabric and regular ventilation limit this effect. At measurement each panel is reviewed separately. Glass-balcony panels mostly carry different widths.

The panel folding direction chooses the blind position. On an inward-folding system the units are fitted to the panels’ inner face, on an outward-folding one to the outer face. A blind fitted on the wrong side gets trapped during folding. Therefore the glass-balcony brand and the folding order are written on the measurement form.

In spaces using the glass balcony like a room, the blind serves two functions. Daytime sun breaking, evening interior privacy. Semi-transparent fabric gives both functions together by day. When the interior lighting turns on in the evening the view stays open. For this expectation the [day-night model](https://www.fenetresystems.com/en/day-night-pleated-blind/) is the right choice.

During folding the units fold together with the panels. When the panels stack to one side the blinds stack on the same side. Therefore the unit width is produced one-to-one with the panel glass. A protruding unit causes impact during folding and strains the rail mechanism.

When the glass balcony is unused in winter the units are left in the closed position. The fabric builds an insulation layer between the glass surface and the interior volume and reduces the cold spill on the balcony-door side. In spring cleaning the unit’s rail channel is wiped with the brush attachment.

The units produced per glass-balcony panel form a long continuous line. The fabric series and the rail colour are kept the same on all units and the façade integrity remains. The unit list is built in a single document by the panel count and the mounting finishes in one session.

The wind criterion is a technical reality on this façade. The gaps between panels produce a wind corridor on high floors; the standard solution for wind load is explained in [zip screens](https://www.fenetresystems.com/en/zip-screens/). The rail profile and the fabric tension are set for this load. The floor height and the façade direction are written on the measurement form.

The fading of balcony furniture by the sun continues on the glass balcony too. When the unit is equipped with the sunscreen series, furniture and cushions are preserved from UV. This protection also extends the balcony’s summer usage period. The balcony stays usable even at noon.

The apartment’s façade order applies on the glass balcony too. The fabric colour chosen by the management decision is kept the same across the block and the unit production is made to this standard. In site-based bulk orders a single colour, single fabric series is produced.

Application Notes

## Mounting & Selection for Glass Balcony

### Hook Mounting

It grips the glass panels’ top profile with hooks. No drilling is done, the glass-balcony warranty is unaffected.

### Panel-by-Panel Measurement

A separate unit is fitted to each glass panel. If the panel widths differ, the measurement is taken one by one.

### Fabric Resistance

On the glass balcony the blind faces direct sun. The fade-resistant exterior series is taken.

## The Panel Count Decides

The panel count and the single-panel width give the unit count and the hook type.
