# Oval Pleated Blind

A rail bent to the two-axis ellipse form and template cutting. The blind answer for custom architectural frames.

## The Work of Two Axes

The oval form is harder than it looks. On a circle knowing the diameter is enough; on an oval the long and short axes together decide the curve. And the curve’s radius changes continuously along the rim — tight at the ends, wide at the sides.

That is why the template sits at the centre of oval pleated production. The form’s rim line is transferred to cardboard. The rail is bent along this line with a variable curve. The fabric is cut from the mould. The result is a single-piece cover tracking the joinery line millimetrically.

## From Template to Production

The oval form’s four-step production chain.

01. **Two Axes Measured** — The long and short axes are taken separately. The oval form cannot be defined by a single radius.
02. **Rim Template** — The form’s rim line is transferred to cardboard. The top-bottom symmetry is checked in both directions.
03. **Variable Bending** — The rail profile is bent to the curve’s changing radius. A single bend is not enough.
04. **Cut from the Mould** — The fabric is cut to the template. The edges follow the ellipse line millimetrically.

## Form Control

- An ellipse may look symmetrical yet differ top to bottom — the template is checked in both directions
- In restoration work joinery skew is recorded into the template
- Frame depth decides the rail mounting point

## Fixed or Folding?

- Vertically folding fabric is possible on tall ovals
- Folding distance is limited on flat and thin ovals — fixed fill recommended
- On unreachable forms the fixed solution needs no maintenance

## Questions About the Oval Pleated Blind

Why is the oval form different from the circle?

A circle has a single radius. An oval has two different axes. That is why the rail is shaped not with a single bend but with a variable curve — and the template is a must.

Does an oval blind open?

The form’s ratio decides. On tall ovals the fabric can fold vertically. On flat and thin ovals the folding distance is limited, so fixed fill is healthier.

Can it be produced without a template?

No. The ellipse form’s rim line cannot be verified with an axis measurement alone. No cutting is done without a cardboard or digital template.

Where is it used?

In historic-building restorations, custom architectural villa windows, bathroom portholes and over-door stained-glass openings.

The windows where oval and irregular forms mount are gathered in the [special window group](https://www.fenetresystems.com/en/pleated-blinds-for-geometric-sloped-windows/); triangular cutting is described on the [triangular system](https://www.fenetresystems.com/en/triangular-pleated-blind/).

## Let’s Draw the Form Together

Once the oval window’s photo and axis measurements are relayed, the template plan is built together.
