# Roof Window Pleated Blind

Pleated blind on the roof window. A tensioned system working on the horizontal plane, sun and heat control entering from the roof. Remote-control option.

## Roof Window Analysis

The roof window is on the horizontal plane and the sun enters directly inside at the steepest angle. This is the area taking both heat and light most densely. The pleated blind’s tensioned system keeps the fabric open on the horizontal plane. It works on the ceiling plane without sagging down. The sun shield of attics and winter-garden roofs.

### Works on the Horizontal Plane

The railed system keeps the fabric taut on the horizontal window. Despite gravity it does not sag down.

### Steep-Sun Cut

The sun entering at a steep angle at noon is stopped at the glass line with the blind. The room’s heat and brightness are lowered.

### Winter-Garden Roof

On the roof windows of glass-roofed winter gardens, the tensioned pleated blind breaks the greenhouse effect. The volume is used in four seasons.

### Remote Control

Access to high roof windows is hard. The motorised option provides open-close with a remote control.

## Horizontal Plane and Control Access on the Roof Window

This page is for the space decision: is pleated the right choice on the roof window, is a motor needed? The horizontal tensioning mechanism’s mechanics, rail and configuration options are detailed on the [roof pleated system page](https://www.fenetresystems.com/en/ceiling-pleated-blind/).

The roof window works on a fully horizontal plane. The fabric weight hangs not lengthwise but directly downward. In this geometry every rail-less system sags. The pleated blind’s [two-sided railed tensioning mechanism](https://www.fenetresystems.com/en/ceiling-pleated-blind/) is here not a preference but a must. The fabric bridges between the double rails and stays taut above the plane.

Control access splits into three per the ceiling level. In a low attic the hand-pushed mechanism is enough. At the mid level an extension rod is a practical solution. On atrium and stairwell windows higher than three metres, [motorised control](https://www.fenetresystems.com/en/motorised-blind/) is the only safe option. The motorised unit’s charge or feed order is written in the mounting plan.

The roof glass carries the harshest light entry in every season of the year. In summer the sun arriving at a steep angle heats the space directly. The [screen-class fabric](https://www.fenetresystems.com/en/screen-blind/) cuts the radiation on the horizontal plane. At night [full blackout](https://www.fenetresystems.com/en/blackout-pleated-blinds/) prevents the street and full-moon light dropping directly into the room.

In double-floor volumes like an atrium and a stairwell, the roof glass is the space’s only natural light source. When the blind fully closes the volume turns to darkness. Therefore a semi-transparent or sunscreen series is taken. The light is softened but the source is not closed.

Snow load and rain sound are the roof glass’s seasonal side effects. The blind fabric breaks the sound somewhat but its main function is visual. In the maintenance period the unit’s rail channel accumulates dust since it faces up. The annual single cleaning is clearing the rail with the brush head.

On the roof window above the bedroom, night light management is two-way. The early morning light disturbs the sleep order, the open glass at night provides cool-air entry. The blackout layer cuts the morning light. When the unit is left open the ceiling ventilation continues.

The motorised unit’s maintenance period is simple. In rechargeable models one or two charges a year, in cabled feed uninterrupted work. Since the high-level unit has no mechanical access, adding the remote’s battery to the checklist is the only maintenance routine.

Its difference from the roof window is the mounting plane. The roof window works horizontally or near-horizontal. The fabric’s own weight does not load onto the rail, the tensioning system keeps the unit on the plane. In the open position the unit disappears on the ceiling line and the glass fully empties.

The motor choice is reviewed alone per the ceiling level. The rechargeable motor wants no cable but charge access at a high level wants a ladder. The solar-panel-fed variant removes the charge routine and is ideal for the roof window.

The summer sun enters the roof glass from the highest angle. At the noon hour, unlike the vertical window, it takes direct radiation. Without the sunscreen fabric cutting this load, the volume stays functionless in summer. The roof unit’s closed position is the only defence of the noon sun.

The daylight the roof window creates in the room is central lighting. While the unit is in the open position no artificial light is needed. The unit closing with the remote darkens the room in seconds for film watching and daytime sleep.

Application Notes

## Mounting & Selection for Roof Window

### Tensioned System

On the horizontal plane the tensioned model is a must. A freely sagging fabric does not work on the roof window.

### Access Control

At an unreachable height a motorised pleated blind is made. It works with a remote or a scenario.

### Heat-Control Fabric

On the roof window the fabric is taken from the sun-reflective series. The heat-shield function is strengthened.
