Adhesive Pleated Insect Screen

Adhesive pleated insect screen set-up — the light frame holds to the joinery with tape. No mark at removal; carrying limit and re-taping.

The Tape's Place on an Insect Screen

The adhesive connection is the drill-free method where the frame holds to the surface with industrial double-sided tape instead of screws or clips. Nothing is drilled into the joinery; at removal the surface returns to its first state.

On a pleated insect screen the tape's role is limited and this is said honestly. The tension cords give the frame a continuous pulling load; the tape meets this load only in light, narrow frame arrangements. On a door, double or wide opening adhesive is not the right option.

Surface Preparation — the Mounting's Weight

The tape's hold depends on the surface. If the preparation is missing it is not the tape but the surface that gives way.

  1. 1

    Dust and dirt are wiped

The plane the frame will touch is first cleaned with a dry cloth. Dust covers the surface the tape will hold.

  2. 2

    It is degreased

The surface is left oil-free with isopropyl alcohol or a suitable cleaner. Detergent residue also cuts the bond.

  3. 3

    It is fully dried

Tape does not hold on a damp surface. A few minutes are waited for the surface to be fully dry.

  4. 4

It is positioned in one pass

The frame alignment is marked beforehand. Moving it the moment the tape touches lowers the bond strength.

Where Does Tape Not Work?

  • Grained and textured surface

On a rough texture the tape touches only the peak points. The contact area does not suffice for the carrying power.

  • Flaking paint and a moving surface

The tape holds not to the surface but to the surface's topmost layer. If the paint is flaking the frame falls with the paint.

  • Joinery taking continuous steam

Kitchen steam and bathroom damp dissolve the tape's bond over time. On these fronts a mechanical connection is chosen.

  • Hot profile in direct sun

On a south façade the joinery surface warms and the standard tape softens. A hot surface is reported at measuring.

Removal and the Carrying Limit

At removal the tape is softened by warming and the frame separates from the surface; the remaining mark is wiped with a cleaner. Since no drilling is done it is the only mark-free option in rented housing and temporary use.

When the carrying limit is exceeded the tape does not let go silently but at once. For this reason the adhesive arrangement is recommended only in the narrow and light recess-fitting scenario. Beyond the limit the clipped or screwed is the right direction.

Questions About Adhesive Pleated Insect Screen

Does an adhesive pleated insect screen fall?
On the right surface and in the right size class it does not fall. Since the tension cord gives a continuous load the tape is recommended only on light and narrow frames; an arrangement forced past the limit gives way over time.
In which case is adhesive recommended?
On narrow windows where drilling is unwanted and in rented use. On a door, double and wide opening the screwed or clipped arrangement is the right answer.
Can it be re-bonded after removal?
The tape is single-use. At re-mounting the old tape on the frame is cleaned fully and new tape is applied.
