Insect Screen Installation Types

Insect-screen mounting splits into four connection logics. Clipped, screwed, hinged or track-mounted. The joinery type and the usage frequency decide the right one.

Four Connection Methods

The insect-screen frame is the same. What changes is the frame's way of holding to the joinery.

Insect-screen connection methods and ideal usage areas
MethodHow It Is FittedIdeal Use
Clip-On Snap-OffThe frame seats with pressure onto clips sitting on the joinery edgeWindows removed in season, behind shutters
Screwed FixedThe frame is fixed to the joinery casing with a screwWindows staying in place year-round
HingedA hinge is screwed to the casing edge. The leaf opens inward-outwardDoors and heavily passed openings
Track-Mounted SlidingThe top and bottom rails are fixed to the joinery. The panel slides on the trackSliding joinery and glass balconies

Selection by Joinery

The joinery's structure decides, before the mounting, with which connection the model will be fitted.

Window Shuttered Outside

On joinery whose outer face is covered with a shutter or railing the recess-fitted model comes into play. The frame is fitted from the room side. No profile is seen from outside, the shutter movement is not blocked.

Depth-Less Joinery

If the inside-frame depth is insufficient the frame is fitted to the outer face. The surface-mounted fixed insect screen is the solution of thin joinery finding no clip on the inner corner.

Sliding and Glass Balcony

On sliding systems having no opening sash the panel slides on its own track. On a glass-balcony profile the bottom and top rails follow the joinery. No opening area is needed.

Door and Heavy Passage

On doors passed dozens of times a day the hinged leaf is the most practical. With a spring hinge and magnet accessory the leaf closes by itself.

Critical Points at Measuring

Most mounting errors on an insect screen are born not in production but at the measuring stage.

  • The net opening measurement is taken. The frame inner depth and the joinery's diagonality are noted. On a diagonal joinery not one measurement but two diagonal measurements are needed.
  • The window opening direction and the sash protrusions (handle, hinge share) are specified. The frame clearance is calculated accordingly.
  • At surface fitting the shutter rail and the railing distance are measured. The insect screen and the shutter cannot share the same plane.

The system architecture and mesh options are on the Insect Screen Systems page; the openings the connection is fitted to are listed on the application areas page.

Questions About Insect-Screen Mounting

Is the joinery drilled in insect-screen mounting?
In screwed and hinged mounting a thin-diameter screw hole is opened. On clipped and track-mounted models no drilling is needed. The frame holds with pressure or inside the track.
Can an insect screen be fitted behind a shutter?
Yes, with recess-fitted models. Since the frame is mounted from the room side it does not enter the shutter's working area. The shutter and the insect screen work together on the same window.
Must the insect screen be removed in winter?
Not compulsory, but removing and storing the clipped and snap-off models extends the mesh life. Screwed fixed models can stay in place. The mesh is UV-resistant.
Does an insect screen seat on a diagonal joinery?
If the diagonality exceeds a few millimetres it is compensated with gasket and corner adjustment. At larger deviations an extra profile reinforcement is made to the frame. The diagonal check at measuring is critical for this reason.

Once the window's photo and the opening measurement are shared the connection method and the model are recommended.
