How to Measure an Insect Screen?
Measuring windows and doors for a correct insect screen order. Steps that prevent errors by clear opening, tolerance and fitting type.
The most critical step in ordering an insect screen is taking the correct measurement. A wrong measurement means the product either will not fit or will leave a gap. This guide explains the correct measuring method for windows and doors step by step.
All You Need: A Tape Measure
No professional equipment is needed for measuring. A standard tape measure is enough. Measurements are noted in centimetres (cm).
Measuring for a Window
- Width: The width of the inner opening where the window sash sits is measured. It is measured at three points — top, middle and bottom — and the smallest value is used.
- Height: The height of the same opening is measured on the left, centre and right. Again the smallest value is used.
- Depth check: Clip-mounted fitting requires sufficient flat surface on the inner face of the joinery. On narrow joinery, screw fitting is preferred.
Measuring for a Door
On doors, the clear passage opening is measured:
- The inside-to-inside width of the door frame
- The clear height from the top frame to the floor (threshold included)
On pleated and sliding models, the bottom rail height is also noted.
Common Mistakes
- Taking the outside measurement: The insect screen is produced to the inner opening. The outer frame measurement is not used.
- Measuring a single point: Joinery is not always perfectly square. Measure at three points and use the smallest value.
- Calculating tolerance: The fitting allowance is not deducted from the measurement. The clear opening measurement is passed on. Production applies the tolerance.
When in Doubt
Once a photo of the joinery is sent over the WhatsApp channel, the correct measuring points are marked on the image. An on-site survey service is also available across Gebze, Kocaeli and Istanbul.
Correct measurement = trouble-free fitting. Two minutes of care prevents days of waiting.
