Screw-Mounted Honeycomb Blind

Screw-mounted honeycomb blind installation — the cell rail is screwed to the joinery. Rail weight chooses the screw interval and plug set.

Why Does a Cellular Fabric Ask for a Screw?

A honeycomb blind differs from a single-layer pleated. The cell (honeycomb) structure is a combination of two fabric layers and on double-cell types the weight rises noticeably. This weight strains tape and hooks in the long term. The screwed connection transfers the load straight to the joinery.

The tension system inside the rail also benefits from the screw's firmness. The cyclical load landing on the rail each time the blind opens and closes creates no problem on a connection that does not loosen.

The Screw-Mounted Honeycomb Mounting Flow

  1. 1

    The rail position is marked

The headrail seats at the bead line, the screw points are marked. The honeycomb headrail is deeper than the pleated one. Clash with the sash opening is checked here.

  2. 2

    Pilot holes are opened

Holes are opened with a thin bit by the profile kind. On aluminium joinery a drill-pointed screw is taken.

  3. 3

    The headrail is screwed

The top rail is tightened in order and balanced. One-sided tightening bends the rail and spoils the cellular fabric's even stacking.

  4. 4

Bottom rail and tension are set

The cellular fabric's vertical tension is set. The blind must stand neither too taut nor sagging.

  5. 5

    A full-cycle test

The blind is fully opened and closed several times. It is verified that the cells stack evenly and the sash stays free.

In Which Case Is the Screw the Only Right Option?

  • Double-cell fabric

Two layers of cell double the weight. Tape stays at its limit. The screw carries.

  • Wide glass surfaces

As the width grows the headrail gets heavier. The screwed connection prevents the rail's bending.

  • Permanent insulation aim

If the main reason for choosing honeycomb is insulation the blind stays in place for years. The screw is a permanent connection.

  • Motorised scenarios

For a motorised honeycomb the screw is the only suitable base. The motor torque fatigues a loose connection.

Screw Notes by Joinery

On PVC joinery the screw is aligned to the joinery's steel reinforcement line. A screw driven only into the outer profile loosens over time. On aluminium joinery a pilot hole is a must. Since the surface is hard a pilotless screw slips and leaves a scratch.

On timber joinery a standard wood screw suffices but on old joinery the grain crack is checked. On all three materials the screw count is taken by the headrail length. A wide rail wants more points.

Headrail Weight and Extra Loads

On blackout honeycomb units the headrail gets even heavier. The in-cell foil layer thickens the fabric package and the stack height grows. On wide openings the screw count is increased by the rail length and the rail's bowing at the middle section is prevented.

The second advantage screw mounting brings to honeycomb is sensitivity. On a side-channelled blackout system the rail's millimetric alignment is a must. The screw locks the rail at its exact line and preserves the guide channel's parallelism with the glass surface.

On motorised honeycomb units screw mounting is a technical requirement. The motor's torque and weight load the headrail end with extra load. This load must be distributed across the screw points. On motorised configurations the unit is produced screwed without the mounting type being asked.

The removal scenario is rarer on honeycomb than on other products. Removing and carrying a tall headrail wants volume. The unit mostly completes its life on the joinery it was first fitted to. The screw mark produces no problem in this usage pattern.

Adjustment and Motor Feed

Fitting the headrail straight is extra important on honeycomb. The cellular fabric's being tensioned equally from both sides depends on the rail's millimetric alignment. A tilted headrail slides the fabric to one side and leaves gaps at the closure edges.

On a motorised unit a feed line is set up in addition to the screw point. On rechargeable motors the port at the headrail end stays reachable. On cabled feed the cable is hidden through the in-rail channel. This planning is done on the mounting day.

Questions About Screw-Mounted Honeycomb Blind

Does a honeycomb blind have to be screwed?
No. Narrow and single-cell blinds are carried adhesively or hooked. But in a double-cell and wide-rail combination the screw is the safest choice.
Does screw mounting affect insulation?
The connection type does not change the cell structure. The insulation comes from the cell geometry. The screw's contribution is the rail's staying straight without sagging in the long term. A tilted rail opens an edge gap and lowers the insulation.
If I remove it is the joinery spoilt?
The screw holes remain but the joinery does not lose its function. The holes are closed with a suitable filler. This is the price of permanent mounting. For this reason it is not recommended for a tenant.
