The blackout fabric winds onto the tube — the brackets hold inside the recess or to the wall.
A mounting allowance minimising edge leakage is taken.
- The clear measurements of the glazing to be darkened are taken (cm).
- The edge-light-leakage sensitivity is written — recess mounting is recommended.
- The mounting surface is noted — wall, ceiling or inside the recess.
For full darkness, recess mounting is recommended — the edge allowance is included in the measurement.
The structure of blackout fabric
Blackout fabric is a three-layer technical weave with an acrylic or foam coated back — the front face is decorative fabric, the middle layer the light blocker and the back the coating integrity. Light passing through the fabric is physically zeroed.
The fabric’s darkness and the unit’s darkness are not the same thing — light leaking from the fabric edges, the top cassette and the bottom profile decides the room’s darkness rate; full darkness needs edge channels and the right mounting plane.
The fabric is thicker than a standard roller — the three-layer build produces a thicker roll when wound; on cassette mounting this volume is taken into account and the cassette depth is asked in the measurement.
The full-darkness build
In a bedroom the blackout expectation is the morning light — for a leak-free build the unit is fitted on the wall plane at a size overlapping the window opening, and side guide channels close the edge leakage.
Shift workers and nurseries are the most critical users — full darkness in daytime sleep directly affects sleep quality; for that need the trio of blackout fabric + side channels + wall mounting is the single solution.
In presentation and meeting rooms projection use asks for blackout — screen visibility is inversely proportional to room light; a fully closing unit preserves projection quality.
Side guide channels physically cut the leak — the fabric’s two edges slide inside the channel and light does not pass the light labyrinth; where the darkness expectation is total, channels are a must.
The top cassette and bottom profile close the remaining two lines — the cassette covers the fabric’s top leak, and the bottom profile’s weight draws the fabric to the floor and closes the bottom gap.
In photo and video studios light control is done with blackout — natural light is cut completely and artificial-light control is gained.
Production notes and order details
The fabric series and coating type are taken by the light expectation — single- or double-coated blackout fabric is chosen by the darkness need.
Colour choice affects the fabric’s outer face — the street-facing face is white or cream, the inner face matches the room colour; the facade appearance is preserved.
Darkness decision list
In every room targeting full darkness the blackout is the base solution — the light condition is met in bedrooms, nurseries, media rooms and studios.
Edge leakage is arranged separately — the fabric blocks 100% but light enters through the edge gaps; channelled or outside mounting minimises the leakage.
Thermal insulation is a secondary benefit — the coated thick fabric limits heat transfer from the glass surface, lowering the cooling load in south-facing rooms.
Fabric weight decides the mechanism and bracket selection — blackout fabric is heavier than the standard series, so a reinforced mechanism and sturdy brackets are used.
Washing and cleaning follow the fabric coating — washable series are washed, coated series are wiped with a damp cloth; cleaning is done without harming the coating.
